The History of the Building

 

1866, Oct. 9: Transfer of 3405-3411 Baring St. and 3404-3410 Hamilton St. from Gerardus A. Haines to Alexander J. Andrews

 

3409-3411: “Circa 1870, Italianate-style, three-story double; stucco over brick. The two houses share modillioned wood cornice. 3409 has been radically colonialized circa 1950. Stucco stripped and brick painted. Aluminum shutters and asphalt-covered hipped roof porch added. 3411 has remnant of rectangular wood porch”

            The 1866 Directory lists him at 1329 S. 15th St.  In 1880, they lived at 3843 Powelton Ave.  James is identified as a retired coal merchant.

 

1872 G. M. Hopkins Atlas shows the owner as J. Grant

1880, July 28: Death of Samuel J. Levick, 31 years old, of 3411 Baring St.  He died in Quakertown, Pa.  Burial at North Laurel Hill.  (Phila. Death Index)

 

1889 Directory: Edward Brill, superintendent, and John A. Brill, vice president, J. G. Brill & Co., carbuilders.

            Their brother, G. Martin Brill, lived at 414 N. 32nd St. in 1870-1887, at 3200 Hamilton St. in 1891 and at 3500 Powelton Ave.

1889 Marriage: “BRILL-SHIPPER. -- On Thursday evening, Nov. 7, 1889, in Cavalry Church, West Philadelphia, by the rector, the Rev. Thomas Poole Hutchinson.  Edward Brill, Esq. and Cecelia, daughter of Francis K. Shipper, Esq., of [3313 Baring St.] West Philadelphia.” (Phila. Inquirer, Dec. 13, 1889)

            The 1891 and 1895 directories list Edward at 634 N. 34th St.  In January, 1895, Edward and Cecelia purchased 3320 Hamilton St. from her father.

            In 1880, they lived at 326 N. 8th St. (Ward 13).  There was also a Cornelia H. Smith age 19.  All three children, James, Anna and Cornelia, were listed in the 1870 census.

            Anna Eliza was the widow of L. Shuster Smith (age 28, born in N.Y.) who died between 1860 and 1870.  In the 1860 census he was listed as a saddler.  (The 1850 census lists an L. Shusen Smith, age 18 living in N.Y. He had a sister names Cornelia.)  Anna Smith’s mother, Ann E. Shuster, was living with them in 1860.  She was the widow of Lawrence Shuster, a butcher, who apparently died between 1850 and 1860.  She owned the real estate that was inherited by Anna Smith.

1906, Oct. 4: Death of Ann Eliza Pastorius Smith , 70 years old, of 3411 Baring St., daughter of Lawrence Shuster.  She was born in Phila., Sept. 18, 1836.  (Phila. Death Index)

 

1907, Dec. 29, Philadelphia Inquirer: “Mr. and Mrs. William Earley, of 3411 Baring street, will celebrate the fortieth anniversary of their marriage Sunday afternoon with a reunion of their twelve children and five grandchildren.”

 

1909, Oct. 24, Philadelphia Inquirer: “Miss Gertrude R. Earley celebrated the eighteenth anniversary of her birth at a coming-out party given by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Earley, at their residence, 3411 Baring street, last evening.  Mr. Earley, who is a veteran of the Civil War, also made the occasion a family reunion of his twelve children, of whom eight are boys; his ten grandchildren and sons and daughters-in-law.”

            Jan and Dorthea Luytjes moved to 315 N. 35th St. later in 1961.
