3603-05: “Circa 1885, two-and-one-half story brick double; gabled front with: slate shingles and wood bracketed surround for two- registers; surround removed from 3603. Porches removed.”

                                    In 1891, both Hernz and McSparran lived at 3412 Baring St.

                                    Louis M. Hernz was born in Cuba.  In 1900, he and his wife lived at 3519 Hamilton St.

1892: Miss Anna Robertson Brown. ’83, received the Philadelphia Wellesley Club at her home, Saturday, January 21. (Wellesley College Magazine, vol. 1, 1892. pg 314.)

            In 1887, her parents lived at 204 S. 42nd St.  In 1891, they lived at 4119 Pine St.  In 1895, they lived at 3314 Powelton Ave.

            “At the Commencement held on 15 June [1892], the University granted the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English to Anna Robertson Brown. She was the first woman to earn the modern Ph.D. at Penn and the first person to earn Penn's Ph.D. in English. After taking her doctorate, she married Samuel McCune Lindsay, Professor of Sociology at Penn, and she began a career of authoring religious works, publishing more than a dozen monographs over a thirty-year period.             She married Samuel M. Lindsay who live at 4028 Powelton Ave. in 1880 (age 11).  His father, Daniel Lindsay, was a real estate broker.  In 1910, they lived in Englewood, N.J.

            Edward was the younger brother of Joseph Ashbrook who lived across the street at 3614 Baring St.   In 1887, Edward had his office at 409 Walnut St. and lived at 3612 Hamilton St.

 

1901, March16: Death of Edward Ashbrook.  Funeral services at 3614 Baring St.

 

1902, March: Gertrude Ashbrook applied for a passport for herself and her two daughters giving this as her address.  She was born July 20, 1855 in Brooklyn, N. Y.

            In 1910, Gertrude and her two daughters were living at 3609 Spring Garden St.  Charlotte was working as a kindergarten teacher.  In 1920, Gertrude and Margaret were living in the Powelton Apartments at 35th St. and Powelton Ave.  Margaret was 28 and was a social services worker.  In May, 1920, she married Nathan Pratt Arnold, 23 years old, of 224 S. Mark's Square.  He was the son of Alfred C. and Margaret Arnold.  They were married by Rev. Robert Johnston of the Church of the Savior (Protestant Episcopal), 38th and Chestnut Streets.
