
The History of the Building
Sometime in 1866-’69, two deeds were transferred from
Elias P. Smithers, a “conveyancer” or real estate
agent, to Samuel Hillman, a carpenter (3608 Hamilton). This was probably 3608 and 3610. 3610 was empty in June of 1870, but occupied
in November (see below). This suggests a date of 1869-’70 for this twin.
3608-10: “two-and-one-half
story Second Empire .style brick double with side Victorian porches and
entrances; first-floor projecting bays, bracketed wood cornice and
asphalt-shingled roof with two dormers. 3610 his Victorian porch removed and
bay infilled with two-story tower above front
entrance circa 1905”

(merchandise?). Elwood and Charles C. were living at home in 1880.

was a lawyer, and Williams was a carpenter/builder (according to the city
directory). Together, they built much of
the south side of the 3600 block of
March 11, 1869
